Coral, or coral root, comes from the Indian and the Pacific Oceans, where it grows 10 to 15m underwater and is harvested by divers. In its natural state, coral looks like a small, branching tree, and may have a diameter of up to one meter. The interesting porous structure and bright red color of some varieties made coral a popular gemstone quite early on. Sometimes the surface of coral is made smooth and glossy through a polymer treatment, which allows for more diverse use as a gemstone. Contrary to many other types of coral, coral root is not on the endangered species list and can be worn without worry of environmental hazard.
